FIRST YEAR COUNCIL

Thank you for your interest in the University of Alabama Student Government Association’s First Year Council.  We are pleased to announce that the First Year Council is the first opportunity in SGA history for freshmen to have an official and concrete voice in the SGA.  Because the First Year Council is new to the SGA and the University of Alabama, we feel the need to inform you, the applicant, of your responsibilities and duties as an original member of the First Year Council.

Members of the First Year Council will serve as the official voice of the freshmen class to the SGA.   Members of the Council will be chosen based upon the population of first year students in their residence hall.  Even if your residence hall has only one first year student, you will still have the opportunity to have a seat on the First Year Council.  The way we see it, the members of the First Year Council have a huge responsibility to your fellow first year students and you will have four main duties.  As a Council member you will:

  1. Host meetings within your dormitories to allow first year students to voice their concerns to council members.
  2. Become knowledgeable of campus organizations and events for the purpose of informing first year students of said organizations and events.
  3. Advertise the First Year Council and its role as the representative of first year students to the SGA.
  4. Write and pass legislation that reflects the ideas and opinions and expresses needs and concerns of all first year students.
